Preserve Damaged Teeth and Find Pain Relief with Root Canal Therapy

Many have heard that root canal therapy is an extremely painful procedure and has the potential to introduce more health problems to your body. The reality is that none of this is true. Modern root canals are safe and painless treatments for repairing and saving badly damaged and infected teeth.

Root canal therapy is the go-to procedure to save your infected tooth in Meridian, Idaho. Get in touch with Dr. Kevin Pulsipher of Mint Dental to discover how root canal therapy can save your teeth and oral health.

Signs you need a root canal

An infection of your tooth nerve or pulp can happen due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or large fillings. Once your tooth is infected, antibiotics and your body’s natural immune system can’t reverse the infection. Only a root canal can save your tooth from removal at this stage.

While only a dentist can tell if you need a root canal, there are tell-tale signs you can be cautious of. These include:

  • Chronic tooth sensitivity
  • Severe toothache that doesn’t go away
  • Swollen gums
  • Pimples on your gums
  • Darkened gums

What to expect from root canal treatment

The process starts by using dental X-rays to establish the state of your tooth and whether the infection has infiltrated the surrounding bone. If endodontic treatment can save your tooth, we use local anesthesia to numb your gums to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Next, we use a dental dam to prevent saliva from contaminating the tooth. Then, we drill an access hole at the top of your tooth to remove the pulp chamber and its contents to stop the infection. Next, we thoroughly clean your tooth all the way to the canals to remove all the harmful bacteria.

After a thorough cleaning, we close off your tooth with gutta-percha to avert future infections. Also, we reinforce the access hole with a dental filling, but a crown is recommended for a severely weakened tooth. Before you leave, our dental team gives you aftercare tips to ensure an event-free recovery.

Root Canal

Root Canal

Root canal therapy is a very common procedure. It has a reputation of being undesirable and painful. But when done properly it is actually painless. Every tooth in your mouth is composed of a crown and a root. When a cavity or bacteria penetrates the tooth, the root and its nerves become irritated. As a result, the bacteria within the pulp cavity needs to be removed and cleaned in order to restore the tooth to its healthy state. Following the procedure, the tooth is fragile and consequently is restored with the natural crown for a lifetime of durability. Root canals have a success rate of 95% or greater. Most root canal are diagnosed by patients’ sensitivities to a specific tooth. Be sure to consult your dentist any symptoms or discomfort occur.
