Common Dental Emergencies You Could Find Yourself Up Against

Emergency Dental Clinic in Meridian ID area

Dental emergencies in Meridian, Idaho, can happen at any time. They often require immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, and address serious health concerns. In Meridian, ID, patients commonly visit Mint Dental, where Drs. Kevin Pulsipher, Tysen Wood, and the team treat a variety of urgent dental issues. Here are the top 5 dental emergencies commonly seen by emergency dentists in the area.

1. Severe Toothache

Severe toothaches are among the most common reasons patients seek emergency dental care. Various issues, including cavities, infections, gum disease, or abscesses, can cause toothaches. The pain can be debilitating, making it difficult to eat, sleep, or concentrate. The pain is often a sign of a severe underlying issue that requires immediate attention. Emergency dentists can diagnose the cause of the toothache, provide pain relief, and recommend appropriate treatment, such as a filling, root canal, or extraction.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

Avulsed teeth, commonly called knocked-out teeth, are dental emergencies that must be treated immediately to preserve the tooth. This type of injury is often the result of trauma or accidents, such as sports injuries, falls, or car accidents. If a tooth is knocked out, it is essential to handle it carefully by the crown (the visible part) to avoid damaging the root. The tooth should be kept moist, either in a container of milk or saliva or by placing it back in the socket if possible. Emergency dentists can attempt to reimplant the tooth and stabilize it to promote healing.

3. Broken or Chipped Tooth

Accidents, mouth trauma, or biting down on hard food can all result in a broken or chipped tooth. While minor chips may not cause pain, more significant breaks can expose the tooth’s inner layers, leading to sensitivity, pain, and an increased risk of infection. Depending on the degree of the damage, emergency dentists can fix chipped or broken teeth using veneers, crowns, or dental bonding. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent further complications and restore the tooth’s appearance and function.

4. Lost Filling or Crown

Sometimes, crowns and fillings come loose or fall out, leaving the damaged tooth open to infection and further damage. A lost filling or crown can cause discomfort, sensitivity, and pain, especially when eating or drinking. Emergency dentists can replace the lost filling or crown to protect the tooth and restore its function. Sometimes, a temporary restoration may be placed until a permanent solution can be arranged.

5. Abscessed Tooth

A bacterial infection-induced pus pocket is the hallmark of a serious dental condition known as an abscessed tooth. Symptoms of an abscessed tooth include severe pain, swelling, fever, and a bad taste in the mouth. An abscess can occur due to untreated cavities, gum disease, or trauma to the tooth. The infection can spread to other body parts without prompt treatment, leading to serious health complications. Emergency dentists can drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics to control the infection and perform necessary procedures such as root canals or extractions to address the underlying issue.
