Crowns Are The Final Step That Makes an Implant Feel Like a Real Tooth

Dental Implant Restorations in Meridian ID Area

Dental implants are often described as a complete tooth replacement, but many patients don’t realize that the part they see and use every day is the implant crown. This final restoration plays a major role in how the implant looks, feels, and functions long term. At Mint Dental, Dr. Kevin Pulsipher and Dr. Tysen Wood help patients in Meridian, Idaho, understand how implant crowns are designed to blend seamlessly into everyday life.

What is an implant crown? How is it different from a regular crown?

An implant crown looks very similar to a traditional dental crown, but it functions differently. Instead of being placed over a natural tooth, it is secured to a dental implant placed in the jawbone. The crown is custom-designed to restore the visible portion of the tooth, allowing you to chew, speak, and smile naturally while the implant beneath it provides stability.

Will my implant crown look different from my natural teeth?

One of the most common concerns patients have is whether an implant crown will stand out. Implant crowns are custom-crafted to match the shape, shade, and proportions of your surrounding teeth. When properly designed, they blend in so naturally that most people won’t be able to tell which tooth is restored. The goal is for the crown to complement your smile, not draw attention to itself.

How is the implant crown attached to the implant?

The crown is connected to the implant using a small connector piece that sits between the implant and the crown. This allows the crown to be securely anchored while still being precisely positioned for comfort and bite alignment. The attachment method is chosen carefully to ensure stability and long-term performance without compromising aesthetics.

Will the implant crown feel different when I bite or chew?

Once healing is complete and the crown is placed, most patients report that their implant crown feels very similar to a natural tooth. As the implant is fixed in place, it doesn’t move like a denture or partial might. The crown is shaped and adjusted to balance your bite, so you can chew comfortably without thinking about it.

How long does an implant crown typically last?

Implant crowns are designed to be durable, but their lifespan depends on factors such as oral hygiene, bite habits, and routine dental care. With proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits, many implant crowns last for many years. The implant itself is intended to be long-lasting, while the crown may occasionally need maintenance or replacement over time due to normal wear.

Do implant crowns require special care?

Caring for an implant crown is very similar to caring for a natural tooth. Daily brushing and flossing are essential for maintaining healthy gums. While the crown itself cannot decay, the gum tissue around it still needs attention. Regular professional cleanings help ensure the area stays healthy and the implant continues to function properly.
